“I am in love with the idea of the apsaras, the figure in flight, lifted into the sky on streamers of silk. In early Chinese grottoes there are murals that feature divine figures in flight, totally nude, twisting and turning in an aerial dance. Nudity has definite symbolic significance in Buddhist thought, as part of an esoteric process to remove obstacles from the course of enlightenment. For me the nude is close to the spirit. It is unafraid, carrying no guilt or shame, an affirmation of life.”
