With the invention of chromolithography around 1850 came a revolutionary system of colour printing which led to the birth of the coloured poster. Among the great masters of this craft - Daumier, Cheret, Grasset, Mucha - there stands one man who surpasses all in artistic stature: Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, a remarkable painter who introduced original and bold ideas into this branch of design. From 1891 until just before his death in 1901 he concentrated his unique skills on lithographic techniques and in nine years had produced a formidable range of prints, thirty-one of which were his superb colour posters. These are faithfully reproduced in this new edition of 'The Posters of Toulouse-Lautrec', a fine tribute to the peculiar genius of this vivacious artist.
