George Pepperdine, who was an alumnus of Parsons Business College in Kansas, became very successful in the early 1900s. When he was only 23 years old and a newlywed in 1909 he founded Western Auto Supply Co. On September 21, 1937 George Pepperdine College was opened and dedicated, a mere 7 months after Pepperdine had decided to go ahead with construction in February. Pepperdine remained thoroughly involved with the college for the rest of his life, frequently being seen on campus with Mrs. Pepperdine, attending chapel, board meetings, school functions, etc. until he died in 1962
