My original vision for “The Day the Music Died” didn’t include Prince or David Bowie. I first had Michael Jackson in Prince’s place and Kurt Cobain in Bowie’s. While I was working on the painting, Prince passed away, so he replaced Michael Jackson. The reason Cobain was replaced, oddly enough, was because of his piercing blue eyes. While he remained in the original, all of the viewer’s attention would go to his portrait, and it was just too strong for the piece. I loved the portrait of him so much, though, he had to have his own original. It was difficult sanding Kurt off of “The Day the Music Died” but I was more than happy to feature him solo.
