“I was in the process of completing a book, The Private World of Leonard Bernstein, published by Viking 1968. One evening, Charlie Chaplin paid a visit. Charlie was a recluse and refused to be photographed or interviewed. Later that evening, while Lenny played on the upright piano, Charlie sang the male and female roles of ‘La Traviata.’ It was hilarious! I asked Oona, Charlie’s wife, could I photograph – she said, ‘oh he wouldn’t mind’ My camera and strobe (hidden in a closet) was grabbed. As they were leaving, I said to the teenage daughter, shown behind him, ‘oh it must have been wonderful growing up with your father.’ She said, ‘I’ve never seen him do this before… only in his old movies!’ ” – Ken Heyman
